This book is for the solo and small firm attorney who wants to grow his or her practice or simply improve the effectiveness of a marketing plan. It is also for the attorney who has had it with fee-haggling, complaining clients. Or who wonders how the bills will be paid before the next client with cash walks in. You can have the practice you want, the income you worked for, and the time to appreciate life. The key to success is persuasive communication in whatever venue, format or plan the attorney chooses. The Aristotelian Method relies on the long professional tradition to create, target and deliver powerful marketing messages that drive almost uncontrollable income growth in any attorney’s practice. Jim Schuster is a solo attorney who has been marketing his practice for over 25 years. He has practice in the areas of general practice, civil litigation, appellate and elder law. He is a member of the American Bar Association and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. He has been the Chair of the Michigan Bar’s General Practice and Elder Law Sections. INDEPENDENT REVIEW Lawyers can find marketing advice just about anywhere, including under rocks. Fortunately, they can also find it at the other extreme in Jim Schuster's new work, The Aristotelian Method. In the marketplace it takes a foreboding amount time, energy and money to learn what works and what doesn't. I know because in my 27 years as a lawyer marketing specialist -- treyryder.com -- I've made a lot of mistakes. Today, my clients profit because I help them avoid those costly errors and steer them to success. In his new book, Jim Schuster does the same. In this one volume, Jim explains the marketing lessons he has learned from over 30 years as a practicing lawyer. His tone is helpful, supportive and educational, as it should be. (No hucksterism here.) Plus, Jim's time-proven principles have brought him a high level of personal satisfaction, something often lacking in the practice of law. In a practical sense, you can read Jim's book as Lawyer Marketing 101. Or you can use this veteran's advice to take your current firm in a new direction attracting more desirable clients. Either way, you won't be disappointed -- unless, of course, you don't buy this book. But that's taking a huge risk in today's marketplace. Describing today's legal environment as "highly competitive" doesn't begin to cover what lawyers find when they go out on their own. In this new book, Jim helps you get from where you are to where you want to be in the shortest amount of time. Plus, he explains how to build the law practice you've always wanted. I urge you to invest in the marketing lessons of Jim Schuster's professional career so you can avoid the costly mistakes so common in today's legal marketing. With Jim as your mentor and guide, you'll find yourself practicing law with the most honorable of intentions -- to help people solve their problems. Jim does this every day and now you can too. The Aristotelian Method eBook Jim Schuster

Recently at a national convention in Washington, DC, I had the good fortune to meet Jim Schuster after he had delivered a presentation on marketing by lawyers. His key points were that effective communication must follow the sage principles of Aristotle, in that one must provide ethos (the why should the listener trust the speaker), logos (the logical reasons to take the action as proposed by the speaker) and pathos (providing the emotional spark to light the listener's fire to take action). For most lawyers, these seemingly simple ideas have either never been learned or forgotten. Instead, lawyers have false beliefs that they should create non-attractive messages to the listener, such as: "I am the smartest, toughest, or cheapest lawyer on the planet." OR "I am a really good person so listen to me as I try to teach you enough that you can actually know enough to understand the law."
Mr. Schuster prudently and practically explains why the myths of building a successful law practice will leave the lawyer client-less and poor.
My favorite take-aways from the book are his axioms: "Clients do not know the value of your service until you inform them." AND the corrolary "You (the Lawyer) do not know the value of your service to the client until they inform you." We must listen to the client first and then propose the value solution.
There are very few books available to provide lawyers with marketing ideas that fit their niche. Jim Schuster has done all lawyers a great service by writing his book.

The Aristotelian Method eBook Jim Schuster Reviews

I went into the practice of law because I believed my arguments could swat others and achieve my Client's goals but my practice wasn't growing as I'd hoped. "The Aristotlelian Method" was a great surprise in showing me what I could do to change that.
This book compels lawyers in sole practice, myself over 25 years, to see where we are, consider the alternatives of where we wish to get and set the wheels turning as to how we can take positive steps toward that goal.
I strongly recommend "The Aristotlelian Method" to those who are tired of the one-size-fits-all approach to marketing. We can't compete with the glitz of some and the glamour of big money law firms. This book shows us we don't have to. The same passion we once had as law school school students can turn things around and shift our business into a higher gear.
Attorney Jim Schuster has written a great book on how to market a law practice on a shoestring budget. But I fear that if I leave it at that, those attorneys with more than a shoestring budget may not seriously consider this book and that would be a grave mistake.

Mr. Schuster is a legal scholar. That much is apparent from the opening pages of this work. But he has done something very rare. He has bridged the gap between legal scholarship and the marketing arena. Few attorneys who "know the law" also know how to market their practices. Fewer still know how to market using techniques that are valuable to those with a limited budget.

As a student of the law I was intigued by his turn of the phrase.
Mr. Schuster's book me back to law school, in a sense, and I could almost still hear the pronouncements of my law professors and I wondered at the time where they had gained all that wisdom. Only later did I realize that those professors were brilliant in their respective areas but not one had anything to offer when it came to advice on how to grow a practice. Somehow Jim Schuster has acquired their legal AND marketing knowledge...and he shares it in this gem of a book.

There are tips and techniques which will fit the needs of any practicing attorney here...some you will know (or have heard about) and others will surprise you. The chapters on Communication and Persuasion are particularly helpful as is his homespun, sage advice on how to set and collect fees.

All in all this is a superior read and should be on the reading list and on the "take action" list of any attorney looking to grow his or her practice in this age of too many "purported experts". Jim Schuster is the real deal and his book reflects that.

If you enjoy pulling out your checkbook every time you need to get in front of new prospects, then don't get this book. Furthermore, if you would rather leave your marketing efforts up to pure chance (or blind luck), then you're better off listening to an aggressive ad executive who wants to push your "brand" without any real strategy.

Jim's message in this book is clear Marketing is a long-term process that requires significant effort -- but not a big budget.

Unfortunately, a lot of marketing advice for lawyers comes from people with little "skin in the game." As a result, your campaign's success is measured by how much (and often) you pay them -- not by how many clients you collect. And if your ad, website, brochure, letter, etc. doesn't lead to more cases, the only solution is opening your checkbook again to get your message in front of a larger audience.

In "The Aristotelian Method," Jim details strategies for using all types of marketing mediums to build the law firm you want and, most importantly, a practice that best matches your personality. Jim's advice comes from the mistakes and marketing successes he's experienced during nearly three decades of growing his solo practice.

Chapters 7 (Act as a Prospective Client) and 8 (Communication) are alone worth the price of this book. These chapters offer a thorough look at how to transform your marketing materials so they communicate a convincing message to your prospects. (HINT Your language must focus on your potential clients' needs. So you have to prove you understand their problems and how they would be worse off without your solution.)

Also, don't overlook the "$50 Marketing Plan" in Chapter 14. The concept is simple, but it has the potential to bring you a steady stream of leads, especially when you multiply your efforts.

Simply put, Jim writes in an easy-to-understand language, while delivering proven tips and techniques you can begin applying to your practice today.
